Colombia military kills 13 rebels as Farc camp targeted

The Colombian military says air and ground forces have attacked a Farc rebel camp near the Ecuador border, killing at least 13 guerrillas.

Air force planes first bombed the encampment, with helicopter-borne infantry then moving in to attack the location, officials said.

Two children in the camp were wounded - one later died of his injuries.

The operation was the latest in a recent series of high-profile offensives against Farc rebels.

Gen Jairo Herazo, head of the Joint Pacific Command, told a news conference that the bombing raid targeted a camp of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc). Among the dead rebels were eight women, he said.

The child who was injured and subsequently died was believed to be around 12 years old and an Ecuadorean national, officials said.

Troops seized several weapons during the raid on camp, located near Ipiales in south-western Colombia.

The attack was the latest in a series of operations against Farc rebels since President Juan Manuel Santos took office in August.

In September, the Farc's top commander, Jorge Briceno Suarez, who went by the name of Mono Jojoy, was killed during a large-scale military assault on his stronghold in the east of the country.
